Last night I was in a bookshop after dark.

Daring of me, I know.

The reason for taking this remarkable risk was attending one of the Mad Open Mic nights organised for writers in English who live or work in Madrid. Each of them had three minutes to read (or, sometimes, perform) something they had written, be it poetry, non-fiction, humour or any ambiguous genre. We had an explanation of the British stiffness of lip, a visit to Heaven, quite explicit descriptions of sexual encounters, poems (or polyphonies) in four languages, the wedding of a Scottish lass in the 17th century, a Shakespeare pastiche, adventures in rural Spain (quite exotic for foreigners, it appears), endless strings of verse, life experiences spoken in thick Spanish accents and a humorous breakup with a city.

Apart from being surprisingly entertaining, it was inspiring. Somehow, hearing literature is so different from reading it and, it seemed to me last night, something written to be spoken (rather than to be read quietly drinking tea) has a different feel to it, a kind of fire that flares up thanks to the energy the audience provides.
